If you are looking for ways to generate readership to your website or blog for long term results, you really need to consider search engine optimization for traffic generation or SEO.  While paid media like pay per click advertising may get you immediate results, you are paying for that traffic.  If you somehow managed to get on Google’s bad side and get Google Slapped, you’ll get no traffic.  And no traffic in internet terms, means no business!

There are a lot of people out there that would like you to believe that search engine optimization is hard and that it is only for the techies out there.  So they charge you big bucks for courses that teach you this stuff or they charge you an arm and a leg for SEO consulting.  So when I found Raymond Fong and Fernando Ceballos of SEO Networker, they were a breath of fresh air.  They removed the veil of mystique from SEO and made it simple for anyone, even a baby boomer accountant like me, to understand the concepts and apply them to my blogs and websites.

As a basic primer, search engine optimization is the things you do to get your website or blog to rank well in the search engines like Google when someone searches for the topic that your website relates to.  There are two main components to SEO, on-page factors and off-page factors.

On-page factors are those things that you actually put on your web page that improve it and make it easy for the search engines to find your page and rank your page.  Some examples of things you can do is having your keyword (the search term) in the domain name, having the keyword in your page title, having the keyword sprinkled appropriately throughout your content, etc.

Off-page factors are those things external to your web page that tell the search engines that your web page is worth looking at.  The main factor here is the number and quality of backlinks (links from other sites) that link to your web page.  The more links you have and the higher quality of links (links from pages that the search engines have already determined to be high-ranking pages) the higher your web page will rank in the search engines.

There are basically 3 steps to the traffic formula.

1.)    Build a list.
2.)    Develop a relationship with the people on that list.
3.)    Market to your list.

By following this formula, Mike developed a multiple 7-figure income and a company worth 8-figures in less than 36 months.

Building Your List and a Relationship With Your List

Building your list is getting subscribers into your email autoresponder, onto your Facebook page, into your Twitter following, into your YouTube channel subscription, etc. so that you can communicate with them whenever you want.  The 2 steps to this are 1) creating traffic (through PPC, SEO articles, social media sites, video sites, twitter) and 2) having a way to capture that traffic (a lead capture page that connects with your autoresponder).

This is critical to know.  The value of your list is determined by the relationship you have with your list – the quality of the relationship.  Mike’s business philosophy is you must give without want before you can get.  People buy from people that they know, like and trust.  The number of people on your list doesn’t really matter.  What really matters is the number of people on your list that actively listens to you and does what you say or recommend.  You build that relationship by giving value, by providing what helps them, thinking about their needs and wants before your own.  That establishes trust and reciprocity and establishes you as a leader in their eyes, earning you the right to sell to them.

Market to Your List – Monetization

Mike doesn’t have the biggest list but he does have a great relationship with his list and as a result, he sells more product to his list than others do.

Leads are the lifeblood of your business and Mike generates about 600 free leads per day.  If you are generating leads at $5 per lead but over the course of a month or year, each lead generates $10 in revenue, you will generate $5 of profit every time you generate a lead.

To market to your list you will need to set up an autresponder series, a series of emails that teach your people something or tell them about an offer.  The autoresponder will systematically produce sales and income – this is the ultimate in leverage.  You can set up this email series with 12 months worth of emails that go out each day.

Your Marketing Machine

This effectively is your marketing machine.  In a matter of days you can set up your system to produce traffic, to produce leads, building relationships with these leads (autoresponder email series), monetizing these leads (again with the autoresponder email series).

When you hear of people building massive downlines in 1 month with 200 – 300 new distributors, they have done this by building a list.  They simply send out an email to their list informing them of their new business opportunity and inviting them to a webinar or conference call.  In a matter of hours they can have 100’s of people in their organization.

Ultimate Security

Developing You Inc. this way provides the ultimate in security.  This can’t be taken away from you.  The only way you could ever lose it is if your hosting company or your autoresponder company blew up and your hard drives and servers were destroyed – but even that doesn’t matter as you will have backups.

Even if your MLM company goes out of business you would be fine.  Everybody else would be out of business as well as having no downline means no income.  On the other hand, you have a distribution channel.  You have a relationship with the people on that channel and you can monetize that channel.  Once you find a new network marketing company that you like and that will serve your downline better, you would send an email to your list and you would be up and running and have your downline organization again.

Some people are going to get angry about this but if you just have your downline in a network marketing business, you don’t have a real business and you are not really an entrepreneur. Why does Mike say that? In a network marketing business, you don’t own anything – you don’t have any real assets.

  • You don’t own the company.
  • You don’t own the products.
  • You don’t own the distributor list.
  • You don’t own your downline.
  • You don’t own the marketing tools.
  • You don’t own the name of the company.
  • You don’t own the url.
  • YOU DON’T OWN ANYTHING!

You are simply an independent distributor and you serve at the behest of the company. This can be taken away from you at any time for no reason.

You Inc.

MLM Traffic Formula 2 is all about creating You Inc.  You want to own a real business, a business where you have equity and real assets that can’t be taken from you. What makes up your real business, You Inc.?

  1. Your list. Your biggest asset in your business is your list. The cliché for internet marketers is that the money is in the list and it is true. The list is people who have subscribed to your email list – people who have voluntarily said that they would like to follow you and that you have the opportunity to let them know what you are up to and what’s going on and new with you. With the advent of social networks, you can also include as part of your list, your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, YouTube channel subscribers, etc. Again, these are people that have voluntarily said that they want to follow you and hear from you. This is your business.
  2. Relationships. You develop relationships with the people on your list. This becomes your communication channel (like your own private cable channel, TV channel, and radio station) and distribution channel for your products and services.

Power of a List

Here is an example from Mike about the power of a list. Mike said that he has learned more from Eben Pagan than from anybody else. Eben Pagan is an information product marketer and over the last 12 months, Mike has written roughly 10 email promoting 3 of Eben’s products, roughly taking about 20 minutes per email. These emails generated $239,221 of sales for Eben or $23,922 per email and 3 hours and 20 minutes of work. (When Mike promotes his own stuff, the response is about 3 times the results of the promotion for Eben’s products.)

As a bit of background, Mike Dillard went from waiting tables to generating a 7-figure income in network marketing using the internet in the space of less than 36 months. He has achieved the level of the 2nd highest distributor in his MLM business and he generates 600 leads per day and 22,400 unique visitors to his websites per day (which is more than a lot of MLM company sites). In 2008 he generated $4.4 million in revenues from multiple streams of income (information products, etc.) from these websites, which excludes the revenue from his primary MLM business. Many of the top internet network marketers have used his training products to get them to where they are in the industry so he certainly has a lot of credibility.

The Convergence of the Internet and Network Marketing

The internet basically changed everything. The network marketing industry was built on tradition. You did what your upline said to do in the name of duplication and you didn’t question it. But the internet changed the landscape.

  1. Competition and information increased. Search engines, pay per click advertising, and Google AdWords have inundated prospects with information. Competitors are advertising all over the internet, for your company and your competitors. Pricing, product, and company information is readily available. Prospects can easily research your products and your company and find reviews of the company, negative comments, positive comments, and places where they can buy your company products at cut-rate prices.
  2. Decreased attention spans. We want things now. On the internet, you have 2 – 3 seconds to grab the attention of the reader. You need to be really efficient to deliver value to your prospects.
  3. Decreased customer retention rates. This is related to decreased attention spans. When you get a new distributor, you have about 2 months to get them actively involved in the process with the products and with the business, or they are out of there. There is always something better, faster, more profitable, more sexy coming down the pike to attract your distributors away. You have a short time frame to get your prospects to be raving fans of you, your business, and your products. As a result, you don’t really have residual income. People leaving as fast as you bring them in basically gets you nothing except burnout and a lighter wallet.
  4. Increased legal oversight. With marketing and advertising left in the hands of the distributor force, and the availability of low cost methods of advertising and marketing where anybody can advertise their products and business world-wide, the risk to the network marketing companies for exaggerated and fraudulent product benefits and income claims leading to litigation has increased almost infinitely. As a result, increasingly more companies will not let you market online due to the legal issues. Say what?!
